Excellent Freight Broker and Freight Agent (Part 2 – Effective Communication Ensures Success)
This blog post continues our discussion concerning the fundamentals associated with "Excellent Freight Brokers/Agents". We have addressed how effectively dealing with people is a key aspect of excellent brokers. This blog post addresses communication and how excellent brokers communicate to ensure success. An excellent broker understands and practices effective communication. It starts with understanding your shipper’s requirements, then passing that information to the carrier. Once this is accomplished then the best brokers follow the shipment from start to finish. Excellent brokers are available to communicate with people when there is a problem and as important, when there is not a problem. Effective communication sounds simple, but many brokers get caught up doing other things. Checking on trucks is mundane work, but important. Many bad brokers have a "tag you’re it" mentality. The bad brokers send a carrier a confirmation then simply move to the next shipment. The worst brokers can’t seem to be contacted nor do they follow up on their shipments. The best brokers effectively communicate and follow up for several reasons. Information is power. Knowing the status of a shipment allows you to be able to service your other customer, the shipper. It also demonstrates to the carrier you care about your business. Effective communication begins with understanding the shipper’s requirements, communicating that information to the truck, then following through on the status of each shipment until it is complete.
