Freight Brokers, Jobs and the Perfect Triangle
Those leaving school and those considering a job change ponder the question of “What do I want to do in life?” In these uncertain economic times many people simply are asking the question, “How can I get a job or keep a job?” For many leaving school the answer is somewhat easy. Those individuals usually have to settle for whatever job is available. Many others already in the workforce either don’t like their job, want more money or hate where they live. All those looking for better job opportunities should consider the “Perfect Triangle” when examining other job possibilities. For the sake of this article we will pretend we are in a perfect world looking for the perfect job. What would you consider the perfect job? To answer this question we will examine three points which when connected make the “Perfect Triangle.”
The perfect job might be one which makes lots of money. To most this is certainly a key criterion. For many the ability to make tons of money is the driving force in realizing their dreams. Money can solve many of life’s challenges or at a minimum make them easier to overcome. So the perfect job has to be one where an individual makes lots of money or least has the opportunity. To some that is certainly the number one objective in a job search. To many others it is less important. Many individuals want more than money. They also want job satisfaction.
There are numerous examples of people working their tails off, making lots of money, but they are still unhappy. They work outrageous hours living in undesirable locations and never have time for the simple pleasures of life. Many others have jobs making less money, but are extremely happy. Recently while driving by a national park the question came up of “why would anyone want to be a park ranger?” They even added the comment “they can’t make much money” along with the question. The answer could be several reasons. Many people grow up wanting to do something they love. The park ranger job might not make the most money, but maybe that person loves the outdoors. Maybe their love of the outdoors outweighed the monetary aspect. Being happy and having the ability to every day work with nature might be more important than simply making a lot of money. Everyday you read about people giving up what some believe are dream jobs making tons of money to do something else. So job satisfaction is certainly a key point to consider when looking for a job. Pay and job satisfaction become two points of the triangle.
The third point of triangle has to do with location. Where do you want to work? Many people have jobs making great money, even jobs they like, but they have to work in places they would not normally choose. Many high paying jobs require individuals to live in remote places or in the city fighting traffic or high costs of living. Other jobs might require individuals to travel and be away from home. As important, these jobs might also be in locations away from family and friends. To complete the perfect triangle a job would have to be a great paying job, doing something you love, at a place where you want to live. Many settle for one or even two of these criteria. Seldom do we get the opportunity to have a job where everything aligns to achieve the perfect triangle.
